This year’s crop of top end bikes have been extremely pricey, with RRPs extending over the £10k mark and leading to questions such as “why does that bicycle cost more than a motorbike?!”

I set out to speak to some independent experts about why the big brand bikes are so expensive – and received some interesting answers.

I'm an NCTJ Journalist and work at Cycling Weekly. Previous to this, I was the Editor at Total Women's Cycling. I've also dabbled in marketing and copywriting - having been Marketing Coordinator and Social Media/Content Editor at Evans Cycles. My first job was working on a local newspaper.  I've written for a variety of titles on a freelance basis, too. I got into cycling when I entered my first triathlon in 2010. I now race crits, road races, time trials, and do a lot of track training for not very much track racing.

  1. Many people use the term “electric bike” to refer to scooters and electric motorcycles due to similarities in their appearance. However, e-bikes are distinctly different from scooters and electric motorcycles. To clear up the confusion, Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (MVSR) officially defined electric bikes as “Power Assisted Bicycles (PABs)” in 2000.

  2. I find your articles informative and a nice change of pace from the steady stream of product reviews. The article on open molds, this and fitting female cyclist are all great topics and your access to the industry gives them a nice insider point of view. Thanks for sharing your gifts.
