This week has been a testing week. Quite literlly, it has been a week of being tested. After much thought, wavering, debating and moaning, I decided to go down the … erm… non self coached route.

I’ve toyed with the idea but never realllly gone for it. However, it was something that was suggested to me by a club member, and a lovely, willing Jill Parker happens to live on my doorstep – so there we go, I’m sold.

I say this so ashamedly becuase I basically don’t feel I really deserve a coach. To have a coach you need to be fast.

My argument for going for it is this: It’s been a year of training, and I havent made vast improvments. At 21 I’m at a good age to improve. The sooner I get down to it, the better. I basically don’t want to waste precious time or precious seasons.

For now, this is going to be a one off, short term arrangment, to get me switching up my training – pushing when I need to and resting when I should. But I already wonder if it might be addictive. It all depends if it makes a difference I suppose.

So – back to testing. I stuck with the affore mentioned plan, excpet I trained on Tuesday and rested Friday – becuase after recovery week, I was uber-energised and I just didnt want to sleep in on Tuesdy. I WANTED to be in the pool. And some of the efforts were altered a bit, so I could do some times sets and send Jill all my pretty data (or not so pretty – slash some minutes off and we’ll call it passable).
The week:
Sun – 10x200m hill sprint + 20min jog
1x300m swim, 4x100m, 6x50m, 8x25m, 1×300

Mon – 75min run (easy and sllloww)
30min core (planks etc)

Tues – 1×400, 4×100, 400 easy, 6×50, 400 easy, 8×25, 1×400

Wed – 2k jog, 5k TT, 2k jog
30min spin, 20min HARD TT effort, 30min spin

Thurs – 1×300, 5x(25hard,25easy), 400 TT, 1×300, 5x(25hard,25easy), 400, 5x(25f/c, 25b/s), 5x(25hard,25easy)
PM – 30min easy jog + pilates class

Fri – off

Today was the Marie Curie Swimathon. I wanted to be under 50min for 2.5k, and *DISCLAIMER* despite the fact I had to do 10-15 metres doggy paddle every 2-4 lenghts becuase the lane had 4 other people doing breaststroke/BACKstroke in it *END DISCLIAMER* I got 49.21 which is passable, and an improvement on last year (32.5min / 1.5k (60 lengths) x 2.5k (100 lenghts) = 54.20 – so 5mins faster over a longer distnce đŸ˜‰ )

Tomorrow is the Redmon CC time trial. I’m really excited for some reason, however, also nervous. About two weeks ago, a certain someone *grumblegrrrr* put my saddle up. For the last week I’ve been in fairly severe arse/thigh/knee (ITB band) pain. It wasn’t until I took my bike into the shop for a new chain today, and the guy said “Your saddle is too high, you’ll get a knee injury if you’re not careful” I put 2+2 together. So – I really, really want to kick some arse on the route, but the truth is my bum somewhat hurts – so I’m nervous. Fingers crossed, saddle now down – It’ll be ok. That, or I load up, ignore the pain tomorrow and sort it out asap…

Anyways – update on how it goes coming soon!

I'm an NCTJ Journalist and work at Cycling Weekly. Previous to this, I was the Editor at Total Women's Cycling. I've also dabbled in marketing and copywriting - having been Marketing Coordinator and Social Media/Content Editor at Evans Cycles. My first job was working on a local newspaper.  I've written for a variety of titles on a freelance basis, too. I got into cycling when I entered my first triathlon in 2010. I now race crits, road races, time trials, and do a lot of track training for not very much track racing.
